Prescription Drug Concerns

Avoiding Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR)

  1. You are at an increased risk of an Adverse Drug Reaction if you are taking two or more medications (and an extremely increased risk if taking four or more).
  2. Make sure your doctor knows your medication history and all drugs you are currently taking -- including vitamins, herbs and over-the-counter meds. If he or she doesn't ask, bring it up and tell them!
  3. If you are taking multiple drugs, ask your doctor specifically: "Will this new medication interact with X, Y or  Z?" (the medications you're already taking)
  4. Be aware that certain drug categories are especially risky in terms of interactions. These include:
    • Anticonvulsants
    • Antibiotics
    • Certain cardiac drugs such as digoxin, warfarin, and amiodarone
  5. When picking up a new prescription, check again with the pharmacist by asking if this drug interacts with any drug you are already taking, possible side effects, risks, etc.
  6. Try to use the same pharmacy for all your medications.  They will have a record of all of them and can better identify any possible interactions.  If you use different pharmacies, provide each of them with a complete list of all the medications and supplements you are taking.
  7. If you experience any unusual symptoms shortly after taking the medication, call your doctor immediately and explain the problem.
  8. Keep a list of all your medications and supplements, including dosage of each, and any personal medical information in your wallet and on your refrigerator at home.  The refer is where emergency responders will look for such a list.
