The Missoula Online Statistical System (MOSS) contains parcel, 1990 and 2000 STF/SF-3 decennial census and land availability data aggregated at the Census block group level. Some of the block group boundaries have been aggregated in order to achieve 1990/2000 Census matching. Therefore, absolute matching to 2000 Census block boundaries should not be assumed. The MOSS Urban Area boundary is blue in the image above.
Census data within MOSS are based on the 1990 STF-3 and 2000 SF-3 data files. These data are collected through the Census long-form which is distributed to roughly one in six U.S. households. Responses from the sample of households that reported on these long-forms are then weighted by the Census Bureau to produce estimates for the entire population. The STF/SF-3 data provide a much more detailed source of information about local areas than short-form data. However, one consequence of the weighting procedures is that at smaller levels of geography (such as Block Groups) STF/SF-3 estimates can be slightly different than STF/SF-1 numbers.
STF/SF-1 files, which are compiled from the Census's short-form, contain 100% count data and are considered to be the official source of population numbers. The short-form form is distributed to every U.S. household and collects information on age, race, sex, and household type. Please refer to the 1990 STF-1 and 2000 SF-1 data if 100% counts are necessary for your purposes. You can access the STF/SF-1 Census files
