Air Quality - Reserve St. and Mullan Road Odors
Missoula Waste Water Treatment Plant and EKO Compost Odor Concerns
In the summer of 2006, strong odors started to plague the Reserve Street, Mullan Road and River Road neighborhoods near the Waste Water Treatment Plant and EKO Compost. Initially, many of the odor complaints were tracked to the animal carcass collection business located at Reserve Street and Mullan Road. However, strong odors continued even after the carcass collection business was gone and the facility was cleaned up.
Further investigations revealed that the Waste Water Treatment Plant, waste water collection system and EKO Compost were the source of some of the odors that continued to affect Missoula. To verify and pinpoint what activities, processes, or infrastructure was the source of the odors, an Odor Characterization Study and Corrective Action Plan was completed in 2009.
