Office of Elections - Calendar


The following calendar shows all scheduled events for the year 2012.  If you have any questions regarding an item on this calendar, please call our office at (406)258-4751 or send us an e-mail at electioninfo@co.missoula.mt.us.


January 12 First day for candidates to file for office.

Within five days of filing for office, candidates must file appropriate paperwork with the Commissioner of Political Practices in order for their name to appear on the ballot.
February 23 Close of filing for special district candidates
March 29 Close of filing for school trustee candidates
April 8 Close of regular registration for school/special district elections. (Late registration laws do not apply for school elections)
March 12 Deadline for candidates to file for office for Federal Primary Election.
March 27 Target Range School District Election.
April 12 Deadline for write-in candidates to file a declaration of intent for a trustee position on the school board.
April 18 Absentee ballots available for school/special district election.
May 7 Absentee voting for school/special district closes at noon.
May 7 Close of regular voter registration for Federal Primary Election
May 7 Date by which federal primary absentee ballots must be available for voting.
May 8 School/Special District Election
May 8 Late registration begins for Federal Primary Election
June 4 Absentee voting closes at noon.  Absentee ballots are issued to late registrants until noon; late registrants who submit a registration card after noon must return to the election office on election day to receive an absentee ballot.
June 5 Federal Primary Election
July 20 Deadline for certified ballot issues (Petitions).
August 13 Deadline for candidates to withdraw general election candidacy.
August 23 Deadline for Secretary of State to certify names of statewide and state district candidates and ballot issues to election administrators; deadline for administrators to certify for the ballot the names of local candidates and ballot issues.
October 9 Close of regular registration for Federal General Election.
Date which general election absentee ballots must be available for voting.
October 10 Late registration beings.
November 5 Absentee voting closes at noon.  Absentee ballots are issued to late registrants until noon; late registrants who submit a registration card after noon must return to the election office on election day to receive an absentee ballot.
November 6 General Federal Election
