Active Living - Take the Stairs

Take the Stairs and Take a Walking/Rolling Break

The Missoula City-County Health Department, Health Promotion Division, promotes physical activity among employees of Missoula area businesses.

The goal is to increase physical activity in our community, as part of promoting behaviors that maintain healthy weights.

Businesses can play a part in encouraging employees to be more active.  One way to do that is to encourage physical activity during break time.

One of the most prevalent risk factors for employees’ diminished health is sedentary behavior (60/100 workers typically engage in no physical activity).

Diminished fitness can result in higher medical claims, more days missed from work, and less productivity while at work.

If you are willing to do just one thing to promote physically active employees, we recommend that you encourage employees to “Take the Stairs" and "Take a Walking/Rolling Break.

Posting point-of-decision prompts is an evidence-based strategy that has resulted in stair use increases as much as 54% when prompts are placed near elevators.
