H1N1 Flu - WORKPLACE CONSIDERATIONS
Information for employers to help reduce the spread of viruses among employees and between employees and customers:
Worksite Checklist:
Review Current Policies:
- What is your sick leave policy? If you do not have one, consider it.
- Reconsider requirements for a doctor’s note to verify illness or ability to return.
- Do you allow parents to stay home in order to care for their sick children?
- Review your penalties for missing work when ill.
Supplies:
- Do you have enough cleaning supplies for surfaces and common areas?
- Do have enough hand soap, paper towel, hand sanitizers?
Staffing:
- What is the minimum number of staff members you need to operate?
- What jobs are vital?
- Do you have cross-trained employees?
- Do you have telecommuting options so people can work from home?
- Is travel a major component of your operation?
Facility:
- How much interaction do you have with the public?
- How often do janitorial services clean common areas?
Educate and Inform:
- Notify employees about symptoms and when to stay home.
- Hang signs encouraging hand washing and sneezing/coughing into sleeves.
- Hang signs endorsing healthy practices in general: exercise, eating healthy, etc.
- Have information about seasonal flu shots and eligibility for the H1N1 vaccine.
- Provide links for the CDC websites and the local Health Department.
- Encourage cleaning and sanitizing of work surfaces.
- Notify those in “high-risk” groups so they know to seek medical counsel if ill.
