WIC Cereals: WIC cereals are high in iron and low in sugar. They provide 45-100% of the daily value for iron and not more than 6 grams of sugar per ounce. Some of the cereals are also good sources of fiber. These cereals make good food choices for breakfast and snacks.
Infant Cereals: WIC offers infant cereal when babies are 6 months old. Before this age, most babies are not physically ready to eat solid food. Infant cereal provides a good source of calories and iron.
Eggs, Peanut Butter, Dried Beans/Peas, Tuna Fish: These foods provide inexpensive, yet excellent sources of protein. Tuna fish also provides some iron. Dried beans and peas provide iron when combined with meats or vitamin C foods, such as WIC juices, and are also good sources of fiber.
Milk and Cheese: Milk and cheese are excellent sources of protein, calcium and other nutrients. Whole milk is provided for children 1-2 years since they need adequate calories and fat for proper nerve development. Reduced fat milk is offered to most other eligible participant
Juice: WIC approved juices are 100% fruit juice. They contain no added sugar and are either naturally high in vitamin C (such as orange) or have vitamin C added to provide 100% of the daily value per 6 ounce serving. Fruit drinks are not approved, as they are high in added sugar. Juice should not replace milk in the diet.
Carrots: Fresh, frozen or canned carrots are good sources of vitamin A and fiber.
Infant Formula: When babies are not breastfed or when a mother chooses to supplement breastfeeding with formula, WIC provides state contracted iron-fortified formulas. The formulas are nutritionally complete, providing calories, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals in amounts needed by growing babies. During your baby's first 4 to 6 months, he/she requires only breast milk or iron-fortified formula. WIC provides formula until your baby is one year old. Formulas approved by WIC can be found here.
Other special formulas are available for clients with certain medical conditions. These require a physician prescription with a diagnosis before issuance.
Physician's can use these Special Formula Prescription forms for medical formula.
