What is a Family Advocate?
Family Advocates (FA) are trained family support workers who are
available to provide support for families. By providing information,
guidance and coordination in a variety of areas, we hope to promote
family strengths – empowering families to attain their goals concerning
self-esteem, self-reliance, and the creation of a positive and nurturing
home environment. Family Advocates are employed and supervised by the
Family BASICS program at Women's Opportunity Resource Department.
Family Advocates work to:
- Develop working relationships with school principals and staff
- Provide assistance to school staff in meeting the needs of the
students and their families
- Provide parents the opportunity to learn about child development
- Outreach to families regarding the FRC and services that are
available
- Work in the home with the parents and their preschool or school
age children on literacy and parenting issues
- Provide housing counseling services to those experiencing any
problems or needs
