Flood Information, 2014 -Sandbags
Missoula County Office of Emergency Management, Missoula County Sheriff's Department, City of Missoula Police Department, City of Missoula Public Works Department, Missoula County Public Works Department and numerous fire agencies are the primary agencies preparing for potential high water events and have been meeting regularly to monitor flood potential and impacts.
Missoula County has a cache of sandbags and sand that is used to protect critical public infrastructure and mitigate erosion. Protection of private property is the responsibility of the property owner.
At this time Missoula County Public Works has a limited supply of free, unfilled sandbags available to the public. Unfilled sandbags can be picked up at 6089 Training Drive (just west of the Missoula Airport) between the hours of 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Missoula County has set up its information line at 406-258-INFO (4636) with additional information. If you are experiencing flooding, or see an area where water is ponding and have concerns please call 9-1-1 or your public works department.
Several area businesses* also carry sandbags and sand. Below are a few options:
|Far West Rock||728-8500|
|MT Flasher and Barricade||542-2701|
*Missoula County does not endorse one area business over another.
Sandbagging is labor intensive and hard physical work. Be aware of your physical limitations when sandbagging and use sound body mechanics to avoid injury. Please click here for more sandbagging information.
Missoula Conservation District Sandbagging Policy:The following sandbagging policy applies to all homeowners in Missoula County:
- Sandbags are considered as a temporary emergency protection measure by the Missoula Conservation District Board of Supervisors, and are not to be left on-site once the emergency has passed to become a dike to the floodplain or bank fill. The Board is not requiring a 310 permit for sandbag placement within the immediate banks of a perennial river or stream, but rather that they are notified as to where and when sandbags are placed, and notified that they have been removed following the emergency. A deadline for removal of the sandbags was set at July 15th.
