Seeley Lake Regional Plan - February 2007

Seeley Lake Regional Plan Draft Release 2/12/2007

Seeley Lake Community Council

The Seeley Lake Community Council has been working with the Missoula County Rural Initiatives Office on a land use plan for the Seeley Lake area. The Community Council will be reviewing the draft Plan over the next month before releasing it for further review by the Planning Board and Board of County Commissioners. After an introduction to the Plan at its February 12 meeting, the Community Council will take public comment at its February 26 meeting, with a plan to take action at its March 19 meeting. After Community Council review, there will be additional opportunity for comment at later Planning Board and County Commissioner public hearings.

The draft is available for your review at this website. Copies are on file in Seeley Lake at the Barn and High School and in Missoula at the County Commissioners Office, Rural Initiatives Office and the Office of Planning and Grants. Hard copies are also available through the Rural Initiatives Office.

The Plan will be adopted as an area-specific amendment to the County's Growth Policy and will include a map of land use designations. The intention is to zone in accordance with these designations soon after Plan adoption.

The Plan Area covers that portion of the Clearwater River watershed in Missoula County as well as some additional lands just east of the watershed in the Woodworth area. It extends from Clearwater Junction north along Highway 83 to Summit Lake. Land ownership is about 55% public, 35% Plum Creek, and 9% non-corporate private.

The Plan is structured with chapters addressing history and culture, natural resources, economy, population and housing, and infrastructure with goals and actions strategies for each. The land use chapter then describes land use designations that are intended to balance community needs with resource protection. The designations include 4 Resource Protection designations (ranging from one dwelling unit (d.u.) per 640 acres to one d.u. per 40), Rural Residential (1 d.u. per 10 acres, 1 d.u. per 5 acres), down to more dense residential and commercial around the town of Seeley Lake. The final implementation chapter is fairly general and also includes a table of action strategies.
