Each year since 1993 the Missoula Valley Water Quality District has held a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event. Many unwanted hazardous and toxic materials are accepted from Missoula County Residents for no charge, including oil-based paints and stains, paint thinner, degreasers, gasoline, other flammable liquids, aerosol paints, fertilizer non-alkaline household batteries (alkaline batteries can be thrown away), used motor oil, courtesy of Republic Services (up to 15 gal.), antifreeze, and up to 6 fluorescent tubes (no bulbs -- see year-round options, below). Mercury fever thermometers are accepted at Haz Waste Days for free, and you get a free digital thermometer in exchange! Items accepted for a fee include pesticides, caustics, strong acids and chlorinated solvents. The fee covers approximately 25% of our costs for shipping and disposing of the waste. Businesses and out-of-county residents will be charged our costs for disposal of all waste.

Mercury-containing thermostats are accepted at Ace Hardware or the County Environmental Health Office (301 W. Alder, 2nd Floor) free for recycling.

Waste Oil & Antifreeze will be accepted at Haz Waste Days at no cost (up to 15 gal.).  Emerald Services will NOT be collecting for this event.

Latex paint is not accepted, as it is not considered a hazardous waste. Try to find someone who can use it up. Otherwise, dry it out and dispose of it with the lid off in your normal trash (cat litter or other absorbent can be used to speed drying). The landfill will not accept paint in liquid form.

Electronic waste (computers, monitors, TVs, VCRs etc.) is not accepted at Haz Waste Days. Best Buy and Staples accept most items for free! P.E.T.E.S. Palmer Electric (2407 Harve Ave. 543-3086) and Allied Recycling (3207 W. Broadway 721-1120) accept e-waste throughout the year, for a fee. Or check with computer manufacturers for disposal options.

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs are NOT accepted at Haz Waste Days. However, they do contain mercury, and should be recycled.

Car Batteries are not accepted at Haz Waste Days, but can be taken to Allied Recycling (3207 W. Broadway) throughout the year, or exchanged at retail outlets when buying a new battery.

We do not accept asbestos at Haz Waste Days. Contact Republic Services (Allied Waste) to make arrangements for disposal at the landfill.
